Black Magic Collection: Magic Chair
2002, soft seat

With ‘Magic Chair’ a totally new way of creating soft seats was achieved. Technically something new was introduced, that even amazed experts working in resin and fibre technology.
By laminating a last layer of glass fibre with a flexible resin over a polyester chair (which has soft foam under places where comfort is needed) a comfortable chair was realized.
What is new is the flexibility of the resin, that this flexible resin is biological, that the flexible biological resin connects glass fibres to a foam, and that polyester resin and biological resin accepted each other.

The way the coarse glass fibre is covering the whole chair reminds you of a familiar woven seagrass or rattan chair.
The Magic Chair is part of Ineke Hans’ third ‘black’ project in 2002: Black Magic, a small furniture collection evolving around “new materials and techniques - familiar looks”.In April 2002 the Magic Chair was first presented during Milan’s annual Salone and then immediately afterwards as part of the exhibition “MILAN IN A VAN”, at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, in the section on Material Experiments.
