Zuinig-Sparsam-Frugal: Eat Your Heart Out

Frugal Film: Eat Your Heart Out
2020, animation

Over the years I designed many pieces of furniture that were extremely economic in the use of material. The sizes of standard sheets of MDF or laminated sheets of plywood defined folding tables or chairs. Tables ended up with unusual sizes since it allowed seats with it and minimum off-cuts. These things you do not always see as soon as the design is finished, hence the animations realised for the exhibition Rood als tomaat, geel als citroen in Museum Valkhof Nijmegen in 2020.

Eat Your Heart Out is designed in 1997 directly after working for Habitat UK as a freelancer. Flatpack, stacking, easy change of colour were issues for production at that time and I decided to give my answer to that and it was also pioneering with a cnc-cutter.
One sheet of plywood is lamiated blue on one side and white on the other side. From each sheet four sets of chairs can be cut and for each set can be put together in 16 ways allowing 16 colour combinations. The chairs can stack and be sold flatpack.
