Exhibition in the Museum Period Rooms. The 17th and 18th century period rooms in the Haags Gemeentemuseum gave space for this exhibition.Startingpoint was the idea people did not live in 17th and 18th century environments in that time, and we don't live in 2003 environments in 2003.How beautiful the old interiors with their old elements might be, when isolated in their own time they become dusty and inhuman.
TRUE LIFE was the point of departation for this exhibition, the interior as jumble of old and new, sense and non-sense, esthetic correctness and personal taste and... clichés like the 3 seat sofa and other well known homefurnishings. The exhibtion contained items from the depots of Gemeentemuseum, designs by Ineke and items from her home. It showed real life where poeple don't life inbetween objects from just one time: life and interiors are a mix of interests, memory, history, collective minds, personal history and personal souvenirs. Valuable things from the past contrast with current life but have their own place.
The period rooms were taken up like a house to walk through with the clichés of the period room: THE children room, THE living room, THE childrens room... Rietveld was meeting 16th century Delftware and the fifties met Louis XVI.TRUE LIFE has been a very succesfull exhibition, showing a state of mind rather than an overall view of Ineke's work. It was extended for a number of months.
